So this is my life now. I am retired. I am planning to share my retirement experience as it unfolds in a series called The Retirement Files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So first up, I actually am not meant to be retired yet. I am still 58 and can’t access my superannuation funds until I am 60. I was working full time until September 2022. My husband Mr All Roads is a couple years older than me and as an accountant had worked out to the day when he could start using up all of his long service leave and annual leave to ensure he would not have to go back to work prior to his retirement date. That start date was September 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So I took all of my remaining annual and long service leave too and we commenced a period of “retirees in training” I have to say we did like it. After all of the years of constant 5.30am wake ups, walking the dog in the freezing winter weather in the dark, weekends being consumed by housework, grocery shopping and lid activities the free time was heady stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We had big plans to travel, take up golf, go kayaking, get in shape and see more of the people we love. Things didn’t work out quite as expected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
We never made it to the golf course, the kayaks are still high and dry, we’ve seen a lot of the people we love, and we finally did get one overseas trip in which was amazing, plus a couple of road trips in Australia. Other than that retirement has been a lot like a weekend that just continues on and on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I know it sounds crazy to say, but retirement has felt quite challening to me. I love not being tied to an employer and having to work to their schedules and goals, but I am a person who needs structure, and losing that framework of working life means I have spent a lot of time asking myself, what should I do now? In the next few instalments of The Retirement Files I’ll tell you about the way things unfolded and where I am at now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
