We have been lucky enough to have a long weekend this weekend in honour of the Queen’s Birthday. Living in Australia we experience quite a nice number of long weekends throughout the year, and depending on the state you reside in, you may get a couple of extras slipped in too.
There is something quite lovely about waking up on a Monday morning and knowing that it could just be a wonderful repeat of Sunday. Most of our long weekends we spend at Treehouse, and at this time of the year we are so happy to have that option. The top temperature at home hovered around the 10 degree mark, at Treehouse we reached 17 degrees, with full sunshine and no wind. Pretty perfect winter day.
One of the things that we knew we would have to do when we bought Treehouse was spend a lot of time gardening. The original owners of the house planted an amazing array of plants, and from all accounts they took great care of the garden for a long time, but sadly it became too big a chore as they aged. After they left the house their family kept it as a holiday home for a while but the garden appeared to be too big for them to keep in check also, so it became overgrown and a little wild. That means a big part of our weekends is about taming the wild just a little and bringing some love to the gardens again to allow them to thrive once more.
When your job is mostly sitting at a desk and the weekends involve a big amount of digging, bending, carrying and sweating it takes it’s toll on the poor body. I am feeling the aches and pains, but also the satisfaction of making inroads in bringing the garden back to its best.
As the sun sets I am sipping a gin and tonic and hoping that you had a great weekend too, more power to you if it was also a long weekend.
